DIY Hidden Hard-point
1- rated lag hook
I used a 5/16” eye with 2.5” of thread
1- 400lbs rate carabiner
1- line voltage smoke detector
1- 1 1/3” holesaw
2- 1.5” sheet rock screws
Stud finder ( or other means of locating the joist )
I am a tradesman so I did not use a stud finder I knocked on the ceiling until I found roughly where the joist was and then probed with a long screw driver to find the edges.
Once the joist is located cut out the sheet rock ( or plaster ) around the joist to smaller then the mounting ring of the smoke detector. The opening I made was just shy of 4”
Mark the center of the joist in the center of the opening and drill out some of the joist to recesses the hook. It is considered safe to remove up to 1/4 of the joist width when removing a notch. In my case the ceiling joist was a 2x10 and I only removed 1.5” of the joist.
Once you have the notch drill a sized pilot hole (based on your lag) and then slowly sink your eye hook into the ceiling
Install the smoke detector mounting ring to the joist.
Install the carabiner and test the hook
Push the carabiner into the ceiling and cover with smoke detector
